World Pistachio Day 25 February 2015

Humans have been eating pistachios for a long time: Archaeologists found remains of pistachios (along with nutcrackers and six other types of edible nuts) at the 780,000-year-old Gesher Benot Ya’aqov archaeological site in Israel’s Hula Valley. It’s surprising that evidence of pistachio consumption can be found that far back in humanity’s lineage. It’s also surprising to many people to learn that the pistachio is not actually a nut: Botanically it is a seed, not a nut, although in our diets and cooking it is treated as a nut (and performs quite well in that role). A third surprising thing is that scientists have discovered a way to use old tires and pistachio shells to reduce pollution. That last item probably surprised everyone. And this next one will surprise almost as many: February 26 is World Pistachio Day! Yes this nut, er fruit, has its own day of celebration. You can learn more about this tasty morsel at the World Pistachio Day web site — it has lots of fun facts. Or go to the American Pistachio Growers web site and get some pistachio recipes such as pistachio banana scones or pistachio crepe torte — they both sound great to me.

Heineken has a “Spark Your Holidays” campaign which allows customers to transform digital messages into handwritten holiday notes. The customer enters text on a web page and a handwriting robot writes the text; the text is then sent to the person chosen by the customer. Heineken is giving away 30,000 codes, and each code is a $10 value at Bond. The robot at Bond writes the message and Bond mails it. Customers can get information on obtaining a code by reading the promotional material in a store which sells Heineken. You can get more information about the promotion and view a video of the handwriting robot at psfk.com.

An interesting news story about a criminal who should have spent more time on penmanship before pursing a life of crime. The FBI is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a suspect in an attempted bank robbery. The attempt failed and the would-be thief got away with no money because the bank teller couldn’t read his note. Read the full news story here. This is almost a “life imitates art” moment — there is a scene in Woody Allen’s 1969 movie Take the Money and Run where Virgil (Woody Allen) tries to rob a bank but is thwarted by his bad handwriting. You can view that scene here.
